Ruben Burgers

When is a sandwich a hamburger?   When Ruben changes his mind.

  • 1 pound good quality ground beef
  • 4 1/2 ounces deviled ham (1 can)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper, or to taste
  • 5 Swiss cheese Slices, 3 inches by 3 inches
  • 4 1/2 oz Corned Beef Spread (1 can), OR 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 (8 ounce can) sauerkraut, drained

Method

Mix all the ingredients together except the sauerkraut and cheese. Shape mixture into 5 patties, each about 3/4-inch thick.

Set oven control to broil or 550 degrees F. Broil the patties 4 inches from the heat, turning once, to the desired doneness, about 10 to 15 minutes.

Or: Prepare a medium-hot fire in a charcoal grill with a cover, or preheat a gas grill to medium-high.  When the grill is ready, brush the grill rack with vegetable oil. Place patties on grill 3 to 5 inches from coals; cook 4 to 8 minutes each side, turning once only, or to desired degree of doneness (145°F for medium-rare, 160°F for medium or 170°F for well done).

Top each patty with sauerkraut and a cheese slice. Broil until the cheese is melted and a light brown in color. OR: put on side of grill and put on cover.

Nice served on toasted rye or pumpernickel buns or bread.

Serves: 5
