The United States of Arugula:
Start the Sequel Seasonal Cooking Contest

We were shouting 'encore' when we finished David Kamp's witty romp through the culinary history of the United States.   (click for book review)   We loved this book so much that we were inspired to give Kamp an incentive to write a sequel by showing him what we are doing in the kitchen today.

As we stated in our review of this wonderful book, "Kamp does not end this book, but makes his own wishes for what the future might hold. It's our turn to write the next chapter."  Where are we today?  What are our food passions?  What are we discovering, exploring?    Have we mastered sun-dried tomatoes and arugula, have we developed expertise with lemon grass and nam plah?

What are we cooking for dinner?

We see more and more home cooks turning to seasonal cooking.  We hope that this is the case, that this eco-friendly way of running the kitchen has taken root.  Enter your best and newest main course recipe that uses seasonal ingredients.  The grand prize winner receives a stack of books from Broadway Books, and nine runners-up will receive a copy of The United States of Arugula.  And, if David Kamp is listening, we may get an encore book from him.

We've reviewed all these books and you may click the to read the reviews.  See below for further definition of "seasonal."

Seasonal Cooking:  This is where we began.  Great cuisines aroround the world developed through human ingenuity when there was only that pile of root vegetables in the root cellar on a cold winter day. We are not restricting the use of onions and garlic, and a hearty winter stew can still call for a carrot.  But fruits and vegetables that star in a recipe have their seasons.  Salads are made with summer vegetables, not with parsnips and rutabagas. Please see that the star ingredient is accompanied by seasonal friends.  Any season is fine.  And if you can, buy local produce and be kind to the planet.
