"Food and family go together like bacon and eggs, bread and butter, milk and cookies - right?" ask the authors of Allergy-Friendly Food for Families.  They ask this question, acknowledging the challenge of unifying a meal to the enjoyment and health of the entire family.  They work with the goal of making meals the unifying, nurturing force that binds a family.  The authors, editors of Kiwi magazine, have developed 150 recipes.  If you confront allergies within your own family, and wondered if you will ever have brunch together again, the authors answer with the enterprising statement, "You will have brunch again.  And it's going to be delicious."

The key word in the title may be "Friendly."  In the creative kitchen of Marygrace Taylor, recipe developer and writer at Kiwi, there is no time to waste being terrorized by allergens, and no time to fear cooking without specific ingredients.  To Taylor, there is only a dive into the joy of cooking with pleasure and taste as the goal of every recipe.  Roll up your sleeves - breakfast, lunch and dinner will all be delightful, and the recipes will be geared to pleasing children.  Each of the recipes is free of at least two allergens, many are free of all.  These are fearless recipes that taste good.  They don't tremble with fear, just dance on without a suspect ingredient.  In addition to covering all aspects of food, there is a section devoted to cooking with kids.  Should you have children with an allergy, you will empower them, and make them aware that having an allergy is not the end of the universe, but a challenge that is easily hurdled.

The authors give solid information to help you understand food allergies, and live an allergy-free life.  They include a section on how to build an allergy-free pantry, and the recipes are indexed in two forms - by classic index and by allergen.

The recipes are delicious and inventive, easy to cook, but filled with surprises.  Recipes such as Carrot Cake, Breakfast Cookies, Pear Yogurt Dunkers, Good-for-you Nachos, Polenta Mini Pizzas, Giant Cookie Cake, Veggie Bite Soup, and Cool Zucchini Noodles will make kids forget they have allergies.  As a bonus, a free subscription to Kiwi is offered with the purchase of every book.
