Reviews of Culinary Memoirs - With & Without Recipes
, and a few Books Too Good to Miss

This review section is rich in variety.  Culinary memoirs have become very popular - we all love those early food stories, and culinary memoirs have become very popular.  Most have recipes, though  our food memoir reviews will always focus on the writing and story-telling as it pertains to food.

Food history has emerged from the shadows of the larger history of wars and epic decisions.  Food history is history writ small reveals our cultural attitudes, how a cuisine was shaped.  When we write food history reviews, we check to see that a work has been heavily researched.  The writing may aim for enjoyment, rather than scholarly presentation of fact, but if the underneath research is not properly done our history reviews will indicate that.  Humor is always with us, and we appreciate the books that deal with our changing, often humorous, attitudes to food.

We've included a few books we love so much that we want to share with the world, though these reviews are not cookbook reviews.

Books about drinks and wine are often the most revelatory of cultural tastes, and we have included our reviews here.  Some will give advice on cocktails, or information about wine, but our tastes in drink are always changing with the times.  Once the martini was king, then read and white wines became the mainstay of the table, today the martini has made a comeback.

As always, we hope you enjoy our reviews.

From "The Edible Series" - The series is dedicated to culinary history, presenting the history of an individual food in each book. The volumes are slender, but filled with information, and written by a variety of food historians.  Each one is charming, informative, easy to read, and accompanied with photographs that are historical as well as contemporary.  The books are well-researched, but are light in presentation, and with humorous accounts of the human foibles that accompany food development.
